5 out of 5 stars Aspire 11.6 Laptop   July 17, 2010

Was shopping netbooks but the more I researched the more I realized that you compromise a lot of features for the size/price. Found this Acer in June 2010 for $419 here at Amazon, just a few bucks more than the netbooks I was looking at. For the $20 or $30 increase you get a real CPU processor, Windows 7 Premium and 2 GB RAM. I was a little concerned that the Celeron processor wouldn't be quick enough but it has been good for what I use the laptop for (internet surfing, MS Office, etc). So far haven't felt a need to upgrade the RAM either. Like the size, perfect for traveling. Battery is good, haven't tested but I can use it on and off for a couple days without charging, probably the 6 hours Acer claims if it was all at one time. Overall glad I chose this over a traditional netbook though I don't know if I would have chose the Acer for today's prices.

2 out of 5 stars Good machine; quality iffy   July 11, 2010
lindros (Atlanta, GA)
Pros: - Raw speed/performance
- Size/weight
- HDMI/USB ports
- Screen brightness
- Windows 7 full version

Cons: - Quality, quality, quality (or lack thereof)
- Balance (machine tends to tip backwards)
- Heat when used on lap
- Screen glare in bright light/sunlight
Other Thoughts: We actually own both the 1810TZ and a 1410. The 1410 is the "better" machine, although BOTH have suffered quality issues.

The 1410 had a loud fan (dislodged part), and it was nearly impossible to find a replacement (so we kept it). (On a related note, our newer 1810TZ has been a nightmare, with a broken "C" key, voltage regulator problem, and screen issues). Finally, the harddrive cable in both machines has separated from the clip holding it to the motherboard, requiring electric tape.

Not good.

A friend bought one for his buisiness. Automobile repair. I liked the size and performance of this unit. I have not been disappointed. It runs my amatuer radio software without missing a beat. Works great with my digital pictures files also.

5 out of 5 stars Works Great   June 26, 2010

The reviews of this laptop were very positive. I was looking for a smaller than traditional laptop for recording meeting minutes--something easy to carry around, but not a netbook--too small. When it arrived some keys were intermittent. I suspected the keyboard ribbon cable connection was loose. A Google search yielded a YouTube tutorial of how to change the keyboard. I didn't want to open up a brand new computer, but the fellow said it was quick & easy, just a few clips to release around the board (but very small). Do this at your own risk. Most people would just want to ship it back, and try another. But it was just as he said. The connector was a bit tricky to reassemble, but in a few minutes the keyboard worked fine. I've had no other problems. The processor is pretty fast for word processing and spreadsheets. It's not bad either for photo viewing. The LCD is very sharp and bright. I got a USB outboard DVD drive--no space in the machine, too thin. Battery life 6 hours, super. It think this laptop is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect travel companion (and what's Netbook supposed to be)   June 24, 2010

I chose this model based on multiple positive feedbacks and after arriving to the conclusion that Netbook concept of being reduced Notebook has been taken too far by Atom-based solutions and experience reduction simply isn't worth the price.

This laptop, in my opinion, represents what Netbook intended to be in the first place - compact inexpensive Notebook for basic most common tasks: browsing internet, editing documents and watching video. And it does it exactly as expected not only spec-wise but mostly from user experience point of view.

Pros: although not as compact as 10" Netbooks, it's still almost twice smaller and lighter than regular 15" Notebook. Running Home version of Windows 7 (not Starter as in Netbook), applications are fast and multiple windows is not a problem (unlike Netbook). The keyboard not only looks nice but also spacious and responsive enough for fast typing. 11.6" monitor coupled with multi-touch zooming can be used for productive work (unlike Netbook). Video not only looks crisp but also has no lag (unlike Netbook). 1080i AVCHD from my camcorder runs smoothly in WMP and installing Haali splitter with AC3filter for MKV alone with HDMI-out makes HD experience complete while 3 USBs with 1 Multicard slot fully cover all your traveling needs.

Cons: my first experience with reflective display in the vehicle was terrible - you can not see a thing (although it's a common issue of most modern machines trying to look good). Lack of Bluetooth may be a problem for people using wireless headphones, mouse and synchronizing cellular phones, but I prefer wire where distance is not an issue (or just get a dongle).

Despite display problem, I think this is a perfect travel companion for the price with nothing really to complain and almost no experience reduction (except certain obvious size limitations) comparing to regular Notebooks. It's what Netbook supposed to be from the beginning.
