Everything I need it to be! July 15, 2010 Dan Gebhardt I've had this since April, and have taken it to Europe and several other trips.
Wonderful machine! Super light, very quick in every-day tasks, loooong battery life, virtualization-enabled processor, etc., etc.
I run virtualbox and Ubuntu within Win7 (for my school research), and it works great. Compile times are obviously not the best, but that's not the point.
I record HDTV through a USB tuner (World cup was great!).
Netflix/hulu all good.
To those out there with low battery life and spinning fans.. check what processes are using your processor. I had a similar problem when I first got it after installing AVG antivirus (I think that was the problem), and had to "roll-back" to a time prior to the install. I no longer run it, and things work wonderfully.
My complaints:
- keyboard isn't bad, but too flat. I think a chicklet one would be better. Once your hands are "in place", it's very nice.
- Screen glare - the screen is quite good, but way too reflective. C'est la vie; laptops are most often like this now.
- Slow-ish recharge time when machine is running.
Nice small laptop July 14, 2010 Alex I got this laptop less than a month ago. It is a small computer that requires some getting used too if you never owned a 11" laptop before, but it is definitely more comfortable than the 9 or 10" netbooks. It also seems to be more powerful than a netbook. It feels like a real laptop. Despite relatively slow processor it has a good performance. Both 32 and 64 versions of Office 2010 just fly on this machine, may be because of 4Gb memory. It even seems to work faster that much more expensive Dell laptop that I have at work (with 2.3MHz dual core processor and also 4Gb memory).
I normally use this laptop connected to a screen and external keyboard/mouse at home and at the office. Unfortunately, there is no option to use any docking station, and switching all the extra equipment on and off becomes annoying. But it is difficult to work on this small machine without connecting to bigger screen and keyboard because the laptop screen has strong glair, and keyboard is too small for me to use comfortable for 8 hours non-stop.
However, the size is real advantage when I travel: it is more comfortable on a plane, it is a quick start-up from sleep mode, and battery life is really long. It easily connects to wireless networks, and also allows me to use my cell phone as a modem via Bluetooth.
Finally, I also use this laptop to watch movies from the Internet (Netflix, Hulu) on larger computer monitor. I think it is a great performer, much better than the Dell I had from work. I think the reason is more productive video card than was on my previous computer.
Acer AS1810T review July 9, 2010 Stanley Binder (Asheville, NC) Nice screen brightness, Audio puny, would think the machine is fast but it is average only after you clean it up. Too shiny, both the case and the screen.
battery is bad and the machine is hot July 3, 2010 fdyrpg 1. the battery is not good as the product describe, only about 5 or 4 hours.
2. the machine is hot after using while.
and I tried to ask amazon handle the problem for me, I was on biz in USA and time is very urgent. And amazon did not give me the enough help on this.
does everything like a grown up computer July 2, 2010 David Trobisch (Missouri - Germany) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After three weeks I have not found a single thing to complain about. The wireless feature is blazing fast on a Wifi-N network. No trouble with networking. No problems with installing programs (Windows 7). Camera, microphone worked on the first try with Skype. Battery life exceeds my wildest expectations. Works all day (I don't) without having to be recharged. Internet video -- soccer world championship -- is in outstanding quality. Easy to carry around. Slick design. Nothing wrong with it. This is not a netbook, just looks like one, it is a full-fledged notebook without the extra padding around the waist.
