4 out of 5 stars Great all-around laptop with only minor issues.   August 27, 2010
    Geekcheck

As a former owner of the Asus UL80JT, the U45JC is a much better option and I am glad I purchase this instead.

First big difference between the two and the most important, this laptop uses the Core i3-370M which is a standard mobile processor as opposed to the much weaker Core i3-330UM (ULV). This makes a big difference when running more intense software and multitasking.

The build quality is similar to many other Asus laptops and is good enough, but there is still the keyboard flex issue. As J.C> said in his 5-star review, the most glaring flexing issue is the part above the battery. This seems to be caused by a lack of rigid frame across the top of the battery section which causes the plastic to flex. This could be solved if Asus were to incorporate some kind of brace or use a more rigid material to reinforce the area. Regardless of this issue, it isn't very problematic and many other laptops have this issue.

Another build issue is the battery compartment itself. The battery wiggles just a little bit even when locked in. When I compared this to the Acer Timeline 4810T, I realized that it was a design issue. The battery fits very snuggly in the 4810T, but in the U45JC the wiggle is noticeable. Again it isn't a glaring issue since it is so slight, it needs to be addressed in future models.

The palmrest can get a little warm in the lower-left and the trackpad area. This was expected since older models place the GPU in this area. The trackpad gets a little warmer due to the difference in material from the UL80JT, but not by much. Speaking of the trackpad, it uses the dimpled surface which I love, as it makes it easier to use for multi-touch.
The fan on the left side does expend alot of air, but that's what it supposed to do. It isn't very loud but you will notice it when playing games of any nature that use the Nvidia chipset.

I'm still testing the battery life on this, so I don't have any definitive results, but overall it seems to have a solid 6+ hour life performing general office work. I am still playing around with Asus' Power4Gear settings trying to get the most of out it, so results are hard to quantify. Nonetheless, the 8-cell battery is great to have.

The aluminum lid is a nice touch as well as the silver color, which I prefer. Unlike the UL80JT, this one doesn't show the fingerprints as much or retain the skin oils from daily use.

Since I bought this for school and some light gaming, I tested out Torchlight and Team Fortress 2 which run well on Medium setting at a consistent 30fps. Since gaming isn't my primary reason for this laptop, I find it to be enough. HD video playback is smooth and I have had no problems playing 1080p videos on Youtube.

The Optimus technology works as everyone expects. It auto-switches to the Geforce 310M when any video or game is played and quickly switches back when the program is ended. Some games may not switch over automatically, but this can easily be fixed by setting in the Nvidia Control Panel. On that note, be sure to download the newer drivers (v257.37) from the Asus site. While these are no the newer 256 drivers with Optimus notifaction, they perform much better than the stock drivers.

For those of you worried about the bloatware, know that while there is a TON of it, you don't have to do a clean install of Win7 to get it to perform better. Contrary to popular belief and I tested this out, there is no discernible difference between uninstalling all the bloatware and a reinstall. To make it easier I suggest running PC Decrapifier, which detects all of the Asus bloatware, from which you can easily pick and choose the ones to uninstall. After that a simple run of CCleaner will clean up the rest and you are good to go. I also recommend it because there may be some issues with installing the Nvidia drivers with the hybrid technology. While I could install the Intel drivers without issue, there were some problems with the Nvidia ones. It seems as if the only way to install them is to let Windows search for them on the root directory of the driver disc. And even then, the Nvidia Control Panel doesn't always install properly. Until Nvidia sorts out hybrid GPU installation be careful in this area.

Overall the laptop runs great and I would recommend it to anyone looking for the solid workhorse for school, business, or light gaming.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, portable laptop.   August 7, 2010
    J. C. Kaessinger

So far, I really do believe this computer deserves 5 stars. I've heard about some rough goings with a few of Asus's new models, but my u45 seems almost problem free.

My first impression of this machine was great: good build, good screen (not too shiny), and light (about 3.5 - 4 lbs).

The computer's performance seems quite above average, though some of the 4gb of ram (about 256mb) seems to be reserved for something. The ability to upgrade to 8Gb Ram gives this machine some nice headroom for future upgrades, too. The entry-level G310M in this computer sports 1GB Ram, and will be excellent for multitasking and light duty gaming. It gets excellent framerates in older games, and even some newer ones. L4D2 and Portal run fast, even at high detail, and games like Mass Effect 1 & 2 or Far Cry 2 are playable at settings slightly above low (this doesn't bother me, as I only game on the u45 when I'm away from my desktop).

Overall, I give it a 10/10 on non-graphics performance, a 10/10 on battery life, a 9/10 on portability, a 8/10 on build quality, a 9/10 on cooling, a 6/10 on graphics performance compared to high-end laptops, and a solid 10/10 when compared to similar laptops.

The laptop gets a little warm at times, but it's positively cold compared to some other machines I've had. It will get rather warm if you max out the processor and nvidia graphics at the same time - laptop cooler or flat, clean surface recommended. On the other hand, the fan won't even turn on if you use the battery saving options, and the laptop becomes quite cool. To wrap up cooling, though, the fan never quite seems stressed, and is usually prompt and responsive to heat buildup.

It's battery life will reach upwards of 7 hours of without any major tweaks to the system, other than enabling intel graphics and shutting off wi-fi. With some easy tweaking, I've been able to stretch the battery out past 10 hours while reading and writing papers for college. With wi-fi on and in use, nvidia graphics on, and high performance mode on, the battery can still last for more than 4-5 hours (more than enough time browse the internet, watch a movie, or play some games without feeling rushed). I don't usually let my battery go below 50%, so I commonly run this machine for 3 or 4 hours at a time. Still, for long plane flights or car rides, the option to go 7 or more hours is great!

The only spot on this laptop that seems to suffer from poor build quality is the area directly above the battery, in between the screen and keyboard. The enormous battery leaves little room for the case, and this area tends to flex a bit when pressed on (not that much though, maybe 1/16 of an inch?).

On the plus side of build quality, the aluminum plate on the lid is a nice touch - it looks good, stays cool, and seems quite durable. The interior of the machine is made of smooth, hard plastic, and doesn't bend or flex except as mentioned. Keeping it clean isn't hard, though the lid and interior do collect fingerprints after some time. The u45 comes with a small microfiber cloth, about the size of a 4x6 picture, so if you don't have one yet, you won't need to buy one.

The 500Gb hard drive comes in three partitions, one for the OS and one for programs and personal files. The third is a hidden partition (about 20Gb) for the Asus quick-recovery (F9 on boot).

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit comes pre-installed on this machine. Since this laptop does not come with a windows reinstall CD, make sure you create a set of DVDs with a backup image to restore your computer. This is extremely easy, since Asus ships it with some non-bloatware recovery software (I've already tested it - it takes a while to re-load and requires 4 DVD-R discs, but is extremely useful, and re-installs flawlessly).

The u45 also has an automatic restore feature (hit the F9 key during boot-up) to make sure you can restore your laptop. This feature takes up about 20Gb of hard drive, and is stored in a hidden disk partition. I'd recommend making a second disk image, and updating it every now and then, so that you never have to worry about losing data. This is done through windows backup and restore, under control panel (click "Create a system image" in the top right).

Also, as Geekcheck mentioned in his review (read it!), you can uninstall any (and all) bloatware on this machine without reinstalling Windows 7.

Overall, I would easily recommend this machine to a friend, and would definitely buy it again were I given the choice. I would not recommend this as a pure gaming machine, or an ultra-portable "pocketbooky" laptop. Rather, this machine is a good mix of everything: performance, portability, battery life, and durability.
