5 out of 5 stars Over 2 years and working great.   October 31, 2009

I must admit to having read the two reviews on this product because of the extremely low rates they have given the product. All I can say is that my Dell XPSM1530 works fantastically. It still works fantastically even after having it for two years. I have had absolutely no breakdowns of any of its parts, no need to seek replacements, and the only problem that I have ever had with it, that seems to have stemmed from a problematic automatic download, was easily corrected with a Dell factory image restore--be sure that if you do this, you back up all your files.

The Video is very high quality, the audio is high quality when earbuds are used, but as seems to be the case with most laptops I have come across, the audio is not very good with its own speakers. The package includes a leather (or more probably, fake leather) case for all of the disks. Some of the programs that come with it include Microsoft Office Word 97, Lojack for laptops, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Premiere, and Norton Internet Security.

It can get somewhat overheated, but unless you are using it by entirely surrounding it with blankets or other objects, usually by repositioning it or yourself, you can quite easily alleviate this.

I also, to be fair, have never had to deal with any Dell customer service representatives, because this product has worked so well. The product runs Vista very well, so much so that until someone explained that people were buying it and installing it on computers that Microsoft recommended not installing Vista on, due to some of Vista's higher demands on the system, I had no idea why all those insulting Mac ads were being played so repetitively.

I highly recommend this product, as an intelligent consumer research the warranty agreement before purchasing if you fear that there will be issues with the product, but I have had a great experience with this laptop, and I love it.

2 out of 5 stars Decent Laptop... Prepare for Planned Obsolescence   August 25, 2009

I bought an XPS directly from Dell over a year ago. I bought mine refurbished, so I only ended up paying $800. It's pretty decent, but many of the "accessories" (battery, volume buttons, mouse pad) are all starting to die off. Also, the laptop does overheat frequently. Now, this wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that Dell has this nifty little loop-hole allowing them to get out of paying to replace any of these things for you despite the fact that you have a 2-year warranty (if you do have a warranty) that was supposed to cover ALL problems that occurred to the laptop or any of it's components. It's extremely frustrating trying to deal with customer service about this. When you contact them they will avoid answering your questions, and try to sell you products. If you ask them why you should buy a battery from Dell again instead of one from a third party (seeing as how your last Dell battery didn't fair so well), they won't be able to answer you. Then Dell tries to sell you back a new battery at $150-$300. It's all very frustrating. And I'm not the only one who had this happen to their XPS. Go to the Dell website and look up batteries and other component parts for the XPS. You will see dozens of negative reviews all telling you the same thing I have written here (all occurring exactly within one year of purchase). So, yes it is a decent lap top, but be prepared to have to pay hundreds (no exaggeration) of extra dollars to replace all the parts that will undoubtedly fail you. You can, of course, buy your replacement parts off of third party sites to save money, but it still doesn't take away the frustration of having to replace all of it. Personally, my XPS is the last Dell system I will ever be purchasing.

1 out of 5 stars Very Bad Customer Service & Long delays   December 5, 2008

I am completely disappointed with the service provided by Dell. First they don't ship the product on time. They don't even mail or inform you that the product has been delayed. When you call and ask them, they will say due to some reason the production has been delayed. After speaking to many representatives for hours together, one reaches a frustration point.

Secondly, the Dell customer service is extremely bad. Very rude representatives, who are unwilling to hear your problem. I have spoken to many customer representatives, but never have I been so rudely spoken to. It is so shocking.

I would definitely never recommend a Dell Laptop to any body. Cheap and lousy product with even lousier customer representatives. If you think you can get a laptop for cheaper rates at Dell, be prepared to wait forever for it to be delivered. Also be prepared for the headache that the representatives will give you. Get a Sony or HP laptop and save yourself the pain.
